The poem has one word lined through and corrected and a note written later in Watson's hand "W.W. and J[ohn] L[ane] there together: Mar 18, 1894." The letters are brief social notes regarding a luncheon, photograhs of his wife and himself, sailing on the Lusitania, and desire to keep plans secret from friends.

William Watson was an English author remembered primarily for his epigrammatic poems. He wrote in the classical tradition, and his primary influences seem to have been Tennyson, Keats, and Matthew Arnold. His verse is contemplative, by turns philosophical and political, and generally structured rather than lyrical. He also wrote articles and criticism. He was knighted in 1917.
